In the frame

If you come into our foyer this week to pick up some tickets from the box office, you may notice the new additions now adorning the walls!

It was customary for cinemas in the 1930s and 40s to display black and white headshots of the actors and actresses which you might have expected to see on the screen inside. We've updated this tradition, including actors and actresses from the last 100 years of cinema.

Next time you pop in, see if you can name them all! Some are more difficult than others...

Regal Film Unit: Make Films Like a Pro!

If you've been to see a film at the Regal recently you'll have noticed our new trailer which runs before films, advertising the Regal Film Unit. It's a new project which we're very excited about, and judging by the amount of people talking about it, so is everyone else!

We're working with a local film production company called Flying Machine Media to provide a film project like no other. Working with industry professionals, project participants will learn everything they need to know to create their own films, from script writing and storyboarding to lighting, directing and editing.

The project has its first meeting on Saturday 8th June, and will meet most Saturdays thereafter. It's completely free, and open to people of any age or experience (though children under 11 should attend with an adult).

So, if you fancy yourself as the next Stephen Spielberg or Quentin Tarantino, get in touch!

October Half Term Fun at the Regal!

Families looking for entertainment this October Half Term need look no further than the Regal! A programme of films and fun workshops promises to offer something for everyone whatever the weather.

The film of the popular children’s ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ books is showing on Monday and Tuesday evening at 7.30pm, and on Wednesday, Dr Seuss’ ‘The Lorax’ takes over with showings at 1.30pm and 6.30pm. Both films have been box-office triumphs over the Summer and promise to be an excellent afternoon or evening's entertainment.

Before the afternoon showing of ‘The Lorax’ on Wednesday, we're excited to be bringing back CineMonkeys, the family games and craft workshop that proved so popular in August. Children can enjoy Lorax-themed fun from 12.30pm until the film starts in the Regal Community Centre for just £1 per child. We'll also be offering the chance to enroll as a CineMonkey, with free goodiebags and the chance to leave your children with us and go enjoy a quiet coffee in our cafe or a leisurely look around the town. Just make sure you're back by the time the film starts!

Oscar is super-excited to be back!

We're also excited to announce that local artist David Symons will be leading two animation workshops for us on Thursday for children aged 6 and up. Each two and a half hour session will guide participants through making their own micro animated film, using digital cameras and stop-motion animation. Sessions start at 10am and 1pm, cost £2.50 per child and include a DVD of all the films made in the day. Parents are invited to join in with under 12s at no extra charge. Pre-booking is essential, as we expect these sessions to be popular and places are limited.

To book places at CineMonkeys or on one of the animation workshops, contact Sarah Fellows on hao@tenburytown.org.uk or 07980 692302. Film tickets can be purchased on the day, or in advance at the Regal’s box office in person or online at www.regaltenbury.co.uk.

Is this film suitable for my child?

The question we get asked most about our films (after 'how much is it?') is usually "Is this film suitable for my child?" It's a very difficult question to answer, so we thought we'd post up some thoughts on it here.

As parents, you'll know better than anyone what might be likely to scare your child. It's different for everyone, and sometimes even a film that's rated U can cause some children to be frightened, or likewise, a fairly young child could sit supervised in a 12A and be completely fine. So from our point of view it's very hard to tell parents when they ask whether a film is likely to scare a child or not.

The BBFC ratings (U, PG, 12A, etc.) give you some guidance on the content of a film; a U film contains no material which is unsuitable for any age child, though of course that doesn't guarantee that they won't be frightened by it. You can find more information about BBFC ratings here: http://www.bbfc.co.uk/

For more information about the content of a film, the Internet Movie Database is a good place to start. They have a parent's guide for most films, compiled by parents and fans, which lists all of the things that children may find scary (or parents might find inappropriate) within the film. Here are the imdb parent's guides for the remaining CineMonkeys films in our August programme and our special free showing of Singin' in the Rain:

The Lion King (U)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (12A)
Singin' in the Rain (U)

You can find the link to the parent's guide about half way down on a film's listing page on imdb, if you'd like to look up any other films.

Lastly, our CineMonkeys films are designed to be family showings, so we won't mind at all if you need to take your child out of the cinema during the film for any reason. Our ushers will guide you back to your seat by torchlight if you want to come back in as well, of course.

If these thoughts don't help and you'd still like to talk it over with us, you can get in touch with us by emailing hao@tenburytown.org.uk. Otherwise, we hope that this has been useful, and that we'll see you at a film with us soon!

What a Glorious Feeling...

We're very excited to announce that we're going to be rounding off our launch season with a free showing of the very excellent film 'Singin' in the Rain'! We're even throwing in a short cartoon before the main feature, because we're nice like that.

The showing is on Saturday 25th August, doors open at 2.30pm and the show starts at 3pm. You'll need to pick up some tickets in advance but they are free! Just get in touch with us (email hao@tenburytown.org.uk or call 01584 810118) or drop into the Pump Rooms in Tenbury (or the Regal on a Tuesday 10am - 12pm or Wednesday 11.30am - 12.30pm) and we'll be happy to give you some tickets.

What a glorious feeling, we're happpppppy again!

Mystery film: 8 - revealed!

We had a couple of correct guesses this week, so either the mystery film wasn't as difficult as I thought or you're all well-versed in film. Congratulations either way! Especially to Steve on twitter and Vicky on facebook who correctly identified the film as WALL-E, the animated Disney-Pixar film.

Look out for a mid-week mystery film valentine special next week!

Mystery film: 7 - revealed!

Did you manage to guess this week's mystery film?

Steve here on the blog did - it was indeed Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. From the section in the Mines of Moria, when they're about to be attacked, if you couldn't decide which part of the film it comes from.

We'll be back with another mystery film next Friday. I think it's a difficult one, so I hope you're ready for the challenge!

Mystery film: 6 - revealed!

Great Scott! It's time to reveal this week's mystery film!

Congratulations everyone who got this week's mystery film correct. David and Mandy on Facebook and Stephen on Twitter all knew that it was, of course, Back to the Future.

We'll have another mystery film for you next Friday. See you then!

Mystery film: 6

Welcome to 2012, and welcome back to our mystery film feature!

Since you got the hang of this so well last year you can expect some more difficult films coming your way in the next few months. We'll ease you back into it though with this week's film, I think.

An absolute classic, if I do say so myself! Definitely on the list of top ten films everyone should see in their lifetime.

We'll have the answer up early next week; in the meantime, guess away here on the blog, on twitter or on facebook.

Mystery film: 5 - revealed!

We didn't have any guesses over Christmas on this mystery film - I guess you were all busy preparing for and then enjoying the holidays. And that's no bad thing! Hopefully it was a fantastic and merry one for all of you.

The film was, of course, the Grinch, the Jim Carrey film based on the classic Dr Seuss book 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'.

We'll be starting fresh with another new mystery film this Friday. I hope you're ready for it!

We're back this week with the last mystery film of 2011! You can mull over this Christmas edition over the Christmas week; answers will be posted in the New Year.

You know how it works by now: post your guesses either here in the comments, on twitter or on our facebook page.

From all of us here at the Regal, we hope you have a very Happy Christmas.
See you in the New Year!

Mystery film: 4 - revealed!

We're a day late with our reveal this week due to some technical difficulties, but as it's given some more of you a chance to guess the film I don't think that's too much of a bad thing!

Congratulations this week go to Steve on the blog and Mandy and David on facebook for correctly identifying the film as the classic "It's A Wonderful Life". In a recent poll, the film was named the public's favourite Christmas film of all time.

We'll have one more mystery film for you before Christmas, another Christmas-theme, coming up a week on Friday. Before that, this Friday you'll have your last mystery object of 2011!

Mystery film: 4

We're back this week with another mystery film; to celebrate the greats of film history, we're taking iconic scenes from films and putting them up onto our miniature Regal screen. All you have to do is tell me what film they're from. The projectionist in our hand-drawn Regal doesn't seem to be very good at focussing the lens in the projector as the picture looks rather blurry... I'm sure you'll manage to guess the film anyway!

This week and in a fortnight we've got a special Christmas edition for you! Can you guess the Christmassy film?

You know how it works by now: post your guesses either here in the comments, on twitter or on our facebook page.

I'll put up the answer on Monday, and credit all the correct guessers then.

Enjoy!

Mystery film: 3 - revealed!

You'd like me to reveal this week's mystery film?

As you wish.

It seemed inconcievable that there were no guesses over the weekend, and I wondered if you'd fallen foul of one of the classic blunders (obviously not the ones about land wars in Asia or going up against Sicilians). But obviously someone took a miracle pill this morning and all wasn't lost, as we got some guesses before lunchtime. The film was, of course, the classic Princess Bride! Well done to Stephen on twitter and Duncan on facebook.

As it's December by the end of this week, we'll be starting on the Christmas films for our next mystery installments.

Until then... have fun storming the castle!

And I promise not to badly paraphrase the key quotes from the mystery film next time.
